In creating Tangled Beach/Beach Tangle artist Gordon Smith used a montage of photographs of driftwood and other cast off items found on west coast beaches. The montage was reproduced onto a copper etching plate and printed by hand using traditional intaglio techniques. Accents of colour were hand-painted in watercolour making each print unique. This edition of prints was produced at New Leaf Editions by Master Printer Peter Braune and Katie Dey in collaboration with the artist.

Xwalacktun (a.k.a Rick Harry) was born and raised in Squamish. His father's ancestry is Coast Salish and his mother's is Kwa'kwa k'wakw/Squamish. Xwalacktun was given his indigenous name by his father, Pekultn, a hereditary chief originally from Seymour Creek area. Although he gained the majority of his technical skills and education from Emily Carr and Capilano universities, he attributes much of his learning to trial and error.

Xwalacktun has received numerous awards such as the Order of B.C., FANS Distinguished Artist Award, Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and Confederation Medal. His house posts were acknowledged with a Golden Georgie Award and his creative bridge design in Squamish received the Arthur G. Hayden Medal at the 31st Annual International Bridge Conference. His internationally recognized art work includes the design of the 2010 Olympic Bid book and works for the 2010 Olympics as well as totem poles throughout Scotland. He is widely recognized for his public work such as Ambleside's Spirit of the Mountain, a monumental steel and brick sculpture, and the carved cedar door panels at the Gordon Smith Art Gallery in North Vancouver. Future endeavours include a commission for the new Audain Art Museum in Whistler and carving a five tonne stone for the North Vancouver Spirit Trail.

The Art of Peter Aspell
is published by the West Vancouver Museum and Richmond Art Gallery in conjunction with exhibitions Peter Aspell: Saints and Sinners, Mystics and Madness, organized by the West Vancouver Museum and presented from January 13 to March 26, 2016; and Peter Aspell: the Mad Alchemist, organized by the Richmond Art Gallery and presented from January 23 to April 3, 2016.

Both exhibitions consist of a representative selection of artworks from the late 1980s to the time of the artist's death in 2004. The jointly produced, fully illustrated exhibition catalogue, The Art of Peter Aspell, includes essays by Gary Michael Dault, Darrin Morrison, and Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, and has been generously funded by Byron Aceman, the Michael O’Brian Family Foundation, Fulmar Developments Ltd, the Hamber Foundation, Emily Aspell-Science and Adrian Science. We are indebted to the funders and to the many lenders who so willingly parted with their artworks for the duration of the exhibitions.

Ron Thom and the Allied Arts

Ron Thom and the Allied Arts is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between Trent University, Massey College, the Canadian architectural Archives, and the West Vancouver Museum, with each institution contributing its own expertise, resources and archival materials.

Organized by independent curator Adele Weder, this exhibition and catalogue arrives at a propitious moment, as Massey College and Trent University mark their 50th anniversaries in 2013 and 2014. They are rightly proud of their internationally renowned Ron Thom architecture and aware of their responsibility to maintain it for the ages. From our perspective on the west coast, we also have good reason to celebrate. For Ron Thom, British Columbia was both training ground and laboratory. He brought with him to Ontario his deep love and appreciation of nature that would infuse both Massey and Trent, connecting these faraway regions of Canada in a rare and powerful way.


Tony Robins is a recipient of the Canadian Prix de Rome in Architecture. He has a lively architecture and design practice in Vancouver, and is an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of British Columbia, running an annual studio exploring architectural space. His student thesis was on the 20th-century history of appropriation and the effect of the media on the dissemination of architectural style. His writings have appeared in the Rizzoli monograph Morphosis Architects and in L'Architettura, Spain.


Brigitte Shim, CM, BES, BArch, FRAIC, Hon. FAIA, RCA is a principal of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects and an Associate Professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. She was a founding member of the Bureau of Architecture and Urbanism. She and partner A. Howard Sutcliffe have been the College Architects for Massey College at the University of Toronto since 1995. Shim and Sutcliffe were both awarded the Order of Canada in 2013 "for their contributions as architects and designing sophisticated structures that represent the best of Canadian design to the world."

Thomas H. B. Symons, C.C., O.Ont., F.R.S.C., LL. D., D.U. D. Litt, D.Cn.L., F.R.G.S., K.S.S., is Founding President and Vanier Professor Emeritus of Trent University. He is the author and co-author of numerous articles, reports and books on international relations and Canadian history, culture, education, politics, and native rights, and has held presidencies in many organizations related to these topics. Professor Symons is Chair of the Ontario Heritage Trust and Past Chair of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

Adele Weder is a Vancouver-based architectural writer and the curator of Ron Thom and the Allied Arts. Her master's thesis focused on the architecture of B.C. Binning, and she co-authored the Douglas & McIntyre monograph B.C. Binning in 2006. She is co-author and editor of Selwyn Pullan: Positioning the New and a contributing essayist to several other books and monographs. A correspondent for design publications in North America and abroad, she received the 2011 President's Award for Architectural Journalism from RAIC/Architecture Canada.

This catalogue was published in conjunction with the exhibition Barry Downs: Melding Architecture with Landscape-A Collaboration in Design at the West Vancouver Museum from May 8 to June 15, 2013.

BARRY DOWNS, Architect (ret), FRAIC, RCA, has been practising architecture for more than six decades. Born in Vancouver in 1930 and educated at the University of Washington, he married Mary Stewart in 1956. They have two children, Bill and Elizabeth, and two grandchildren, Susan and Curtis Morgans. For his family, he designed three houses: a Dunbar Courtyard house on Southland flats in Vancouver, a tree house on Bowen Island and a seafront dwelling near Whytecliff in West Vancouver, which is his current home.

He began his professional career when he joined Thompson Berwick Pratt and Partners in 1954 and collaborated in design with partners Roy Jessiman and Ron Thom. In 1969, Downs formed his own firm with Richard Archambault - Downs/Archambault & Partners - and designed such important structures as the North Vancouver Civic Centre, the Sedgewick Building at the University of Victoria and the Lester Pearson College of the Pacific (with Ron Thom) - all of which had a symbiotic relationship with their landscaped sites.

A book he wrote about saving 19th century British Columbia religious structures, Sacred Places, was published by Douglas & McIntyre in 1980. Downs served on the City of Vancouver's Design Panel and its first heritage advisory groups. His interest in building preservation, socially responsive design and community planning heightened during the 1970s. Under his direction, the Carnegie Library which had been built in 1903 was retrofitted as a community centre for residents of the Downtown Eastside. In collaboration with others, Downs played a major role in establishing new Vancouver communities at Champlain Heights, False Creek South, False Creek North, Expo Lands and at International Village. In these projects, some of the first in a humane urban planning and architectural approach that has come to be known as Vancouverism, abundant landscaping was the preferred binding element between buildings designed for mixed uses, creating view alternatives and enriching spaces and neighbourhood life.

His later designs have been equally sensitive to the interrelationship between buildings and the surrounding natural environment. In the early 1990s he was the design partner for two Kwantlen University campuses, the Campbell River Museum, Concord Pacific's award-winning Waterworks at Beatty Mews, and the nearby Crestmark towers. In partnership with other Canadian architects, he and members of his firm have helped develop such Vancouver icons as Canada Place, the Pan Pacific Hotel and Library Square.

Today, from his studio, Barry Downs undertakes smaller projects and consults with others. He continues to design with urban and natural settings in mind and creates building and landscape environments of surprise and delight.

The exhibitions are curated by Astrid Heyerdahl, Visual Arts Manager at the Evergreen Cultural Centre and Darrin Morrison, Director/Curator of the West Vancouver Museum.


LARY TIMEWELL BREMNER is a poet who also writes about photography and art. Founder of Tsunami Editions in the mid 1980s, he recently returned to Vancouver after 20 years in Fukushima, Japan. His current project is the print-on-demand book series, obvious epiphanies press. A book of new work, molecular hyperbole, will appear in 2013.

GEORGE STANLEY has published seven books of poetry, including Gentle Northern Summer, Opening Day, The Stick, and You. He was the recipient of the Shelley Memorial Award for Poetry in 2006. His most recent book is Vancouver: A Poem (New Star, 2008), and a new collection, After Desire, will appear from new Star Books in 2013. 

GEORGE BOWERING, the country's first Poet Laureate, is one of Canada's most complete and prolific men of letters: fiction writer, poet, essayist, historian, critic and memoirist, among other things. His most recent books include Diamond Alphabet: Meditations on Baseball (Bookthug, 2011) and Pinboy (Cormorant, 2012). A new book of poems, Teeth, will appear from Mansfield Press in 2013.





Sonny Assu

Through museum interventions, large-scale installations, sculpture, photography, printmaking and paintings, Sonny Assu merges the aesthetics of Indigenous iconography with a pop art sensibility in an effort to address contemporary, political and ideological issues. His work often focuses on Indigenous issues and rights, consumerism, branding and new technologies, and the ways in which the past has come to inform contemporary ideas and identities. Assu infuses his work with wry humour to open the dialogue towards the use of consumerism, branding and technology as totemic representation. Within this, his work deals with the loss of language, loss of cultural resources and the effects of colonization upon the Indigenous people of North America.

Sonny is Ligwilda'xw of the We Wai Kai First Nation (Cape Mudge). He graduated from Emily Carr University in 2002 and is currently enrolled in the MFA program at Concordia University. He received the BC Creative Achievement Award in First Nations art in 2011 and was long-listed for the Sobey art Award in 2012 and 2013. He currently lives and works in Montreal.


Heather Igloliorte (Inuk, Nunatsiavut Territory) is an independent curator and Assistant Professor of Aboriginal Art History at Concordia University in Montreal. Her recent publications include essays in Inuit Modern (2010), Curating Difficult Knowledge (2011), Manifestations: New Native Art Criticism (2012), Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 (2012) and Negotiations in a Vacant Lot: Studying the Visual in Canada (2013).

Dion Kliner was born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1959. After receiving an MFA he moved to New York City, where he worked as a sculptor and began writing about art. Since 1998, Kliner has published more than forty essays and reviews. He now lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his family.

Kathleen Ritter is an artist and curator. She was Associate Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 2007 to 2012, where she organized the exhibitions How Soon is Now: Contemporary Culture (with Tania Willard), Rebecca Belmore: Rising to the Occasion (with Daina Augaitis) and commissioned several public artworks for Offsite. Her writing has appeared in ESSE, Prefix Photo and Fillip as well as in numerous catalogues. Ritter is currently an artist in residence at La Cite International des Arts, Paris.

The West Vancouver Museum is pleased to announce the publication of Selwyn Pullan: Photographing Mid-Century West Coast Modernism featuring the work of critically acclaimed Canadian photographer Selwyn Pullan.

In the 1950s and '60s, a new architecture was transforming the west coast of North America. Post and beam construction, sleekly sculptural lines and dramatic natural settings were hallmarks of mid-century West Coast Modernism, and Selwyn Pullan played a crucial role in popularizing this bold and innovative style in Vancouver. His photographs of the region's rapidly changing architectural landscape dominated the local journals and consumer magazines and helped shape the taste of a nation.

Pullan photographed projects for British Columbia's leading architects of the era, including Ron Thom, Fred Hollingsworth, Ned Pratt, Arthur Erickson and Barry Downs. With many of these projects now demolished or altered beyond recognition, his archive forms a crucial record of this definitive architectural movement.

The first full-length book dedicated to Pullan's compelling photographs, Selwyn Pullan is an extensive retrospective with beautifully reproduced images and illuminating texts that place the photographer in historical and cultural context.


KIRIKO WATANABE, assistant curator at the West Vancouver Museum, has worked closely with Selwyn Pullan for many years reviewing his negative archives and scanning, compiling and researching images for Pullan's exhibitions and monograph.

ADELE WEDER is an award-winning architectural writer, curator and cultural journalist. She is co-author of B.C. Binning and A Guidebook to Contemporary Architecture in Vancouver.

DONALD LUXTON is a heritage consultant, architectural historian and the author of Building the West, a comprehensive survey of early 19th and 20th century architects in British Columbia.

BARRY DOWNS is a long-time associate of Selwyn Pullan. Downs is a recipient of many architectural awards, including the Massey Medal, and has served on Vancouver's heritage and civic design panels for over four decades.
